The detection of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in opaque ocular media (eg, vitreous hemor-rhage) is a well-known indication for B-scan ultrasound. In recent years, however, there has been considerable interest in using B-scan to demonstrate PVD in clear ocular media, in part to assess the efficacy of intraocu-

The posterior segment of the eye is the back two-thirds of the eye and consists of the vitreous, retina, optic nerve, and choroid. If the posterior segment of the eye is difficult for the ophthalmologist to view due to cataract, vitreous hemorrhage, and/or retinal tear/detachment, a B scan may be ordered to better evaluate the back of the eye. Se hela listan på radiopaedia.org All patients underwent intraoperative B-scan ultrasonography and 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy within 12 h after open globe injury. Intraoperative B-scan ultrasonography was feasible in all cases and was useful for diagnosing choroidal hemorrhage (four eyes), massive subretinal hemorrhage (two eyes), and retinal detachment (five eyes). Inclusion criteria were as follows: all consecutive patients referred to the center for vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and PVD and diagnosed by B-scan US with retinal tear. Patients referred for laser treatment were also included when retinal tear was clinically diagnosed by B-scan US. Both eyes of the same patient could be included.

B-Scan Ocular Ultrasound. Ultrasound of the eye is a common NON-INVASIVE procedure conducted by our skilled retinal physicians. Ultrasound is commonly used to image and evaluate the posterior area of the eye. Common reasons for ultrasound are listed below.

Early symptoms of rhegmatogenous detachment may include dark or irregular vitreous floaters (particularly a sudden increase), flashes of light (photopsias), and blurred vision.

Diagnostic B-scan ultrasound accurately images intraocular structures and give detachments, rhegmatogenous versus exudative retinal detachments, and

Urgent evaluations are recommended for a retinal detachment, while a specialist can see vitreous abnormalities (detachment and hemorrhage) in a non-urgent manner. As always, using your clinical examination in a patient with visual disturbances in conjunction with point-of-care ultrasound examination will allow for the highest level of care. OCT B-scan through the nasal portion of the electrode array shows a retinal detachment but complete apposition of the array to the macula at 3.5 years after implantation (H).
